I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 106

Horace couldn’t help but chuckle, his gaze on me deep and unreadable. “Zephyra,” he said after a moment, “I have to go abroad for a couple of days starting tomorrow for a follow-up at the hospital. I’ve already told Uncle Julian, but I wanted to let you know as well.”

I paused. Horace always seemed so normal that I’d almost forgotten he’d also suffered a leg injury.

I sat up straight. “Of course, go take care of it. I’ll be here for Uncle Julian, and I’ll hire a nurse to help out. Don’t you worry about a thing.”

A complex emotion flickered across Horace’s handsome face. He just looked at me and said, “It’s just a check-up, I’ll be back soon. My leg is fine now, so you don’t need to worry too much either.”

Was I that obvious?

I forced a smile. I kept telling myself I had done my best to make up for what happened to his leg, but if he hadn’t saved me all those years ago, he would never have been hurt. The guilt was always there, compounded by the memory of him dying for me in my past life. It was a weight I could never truly shed.

Sensing the shift in mood, Julian cleared his throat, pulling me from my thoughts.

“Zephyra, how about you take me for a walk?”

“Of course.” I pushed Uncle Julian’s wheelchair through the hospital grounds with Horace walking quietly beside us.

Many patients were out for an evening stroll after dinner. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves as I watched people come and go, feeling a pang of emotion.

Being healthy was such a luxury.

Suddenly, a familiar figure flashed past in my peripheral vision, and my face went pale.

“Queena!”

Horace, startled, looked at me in confusion. “What is it, Zephyra?”

“Horace, can you take over for a second?” Without waiting for an answer, I let go of the wheelchair and sprinted after the figure. My heart pounded with urgency, but I lost her in the crowd of evening walkers.

Panting, I leaned against a wall, trying to catch my breath. My heart hammered against my ribs, my fingers went ice-cold, and a chill shot down my spine. Memories of my past life flooded back.
