She tightened her grip on the wineglass, forcing a smile onto her exquisitely made-up face. “Steven, I just wanted to talk to you. I saw my cousin the other day. She wanted to buy something from my friend, but it was too expensive. Then, this incredibly handsome man paid for it for her.”
“Do you know who it was, Steven? It was that Horace guy she was on a date with a few days ago. They’re always together, so close. I couldn’t stand it, so I told her she shouldn’t be two-timing you. And then she beat me up. Now I can’t even show my face in public; I have to wear this veil.”
I blinked.
Did she forget I was sitting right here?
Who tattles on someone right in front of them?
Steven’s face immediately darkened. He looked at me, his expression unreadable. “Is what she said true?”
I shrugged. “Yes. Horace did pay for something for me.”
She was talking about what had happened a few days ago, when Horace had stood up for me as I was reclaiming my mother’s heirlooms.
I didn’t feel the need to explain. As far as Steven was concerned, I was a promiscuous flirt, and it was better to let him think that.
A triumphant smile flashed across Antonia’s face, and she quickly added more fuel to the fire.
“I just feel so bad for you, Steven. You’re so good to her, always protecting her, but it seems like her heart isn’t with you at all. I even saw Horace holding her the other day.”
It was as if she had struck a nerve. Steven’s handsome face turned thunderous.
I sensed his anger and braced myself for an attack, but instead, he turned his cold gaze on Antonia. “You look like a circus monkey. You’re loud and tacky. You were raised in the Jones household, and yet you dress like a streetwalker. Are you trying to be a call girl?”
I raised an eyebrow.
Antonia’s face froze. “Steven…”
