With a shriek, she lunged at me, trying to grab my hair. I kicked her away, sending her sprawling to the floor again.
I tossed the knife aside, straddled her, and began slapping her from side to side.
“Was I born rich? If you hated the idea of Steven marrying me so much, why did you agree to it in the first place? You should have kept your precious son to yourself! Now you’re blaming me? Blame your own damn self!”
“If my dad took your money, go yell at him! Why are you yelling at me? I never got any of the benefits, but I get all the blame. Do you not have eyes, or do you not have a brain? Do I have to teach you how to be a decent human being, you useless piece of trash?”
I had never wanted to get entangled with them. Today was supposed to be about divorcing Steven. But their words had dredged up all the resentment and frustration from my past life.
Five years. I had poured my heart and soul into loving Steven for five years. I had done the same for his mother and Thomas.
My mother-in-law was cruel, sharp-tongued, and merciless with her insults. I endured it all. When she wanted special soups, I stewed them for her daily. I cooked for her, spent my own money on gifts for her, all in the desperate hope of earning her approval.
Thomas was the same. He was Steven’s brother, just as foul-mouthed and sleazy. I despised him, but I still had to humor him, to cater to him. He treated me like a maid, and I accepted it.
I knew their hearts were cold, but I never imagined they were destined to never accept me from the very beginning. For years, my mother-in-law had forced fertility tonics down my throat, all while plotting how to drive me mad and push me out so she could find a more suitable second wife for Steven.
And Thomas knew everything. He just stood by and watched, waiting for me to be kicked out.
All my sincere efforts, all my attempts to please them, were nothing but a pathetic joke.
I regretted it. I shouldn’t have been so patient. I should have marched in here on the day I was reborn and beaten them all to a pulp!
My mother-in-law screamed, her face swollen and bruised, her makeup streaked with tears. “Thomas!” she shrieked. “Are you just going to stand there and watch your mother be treated like this?!”
