He holds a grudge like a true Scorpio.
He’d only overheard my excuse to get away three days ago over the phone, and he still remembered it.
I looked at the handsome, polished man before me and offered a smile that didn’t reach my eyes.
“That’s right. My husband did a lot of bad things, so it’s no surprise he died young. But I suppose he was impressive in his own way, managing to befriend a business genius like you, Mr. Lancaster. It’s thanks to him we had the chance to meet at his funeral. I’m so grateful to my dear husband.”
A cold scoff escaped Steven’s lips. “Or could it be that you’re just bad luck? That you jinxed your husband?”
“Impossible,” I said, full of righteous indignation. “A fortune teller once told me I was born under a lucky star. I bring good fortune to my husbands.”
He could deny me entry, but he wasn’t going to slander me.
Steven’s cold smirk deepened, his voice crisp and cool. “There are plenty of contestants, but it’s rare to see one so shameless. Check if she’s on the list. If she is, let her in to make a fool of herself.”
The guard, surprised, quickly recovered. “Right away, Mr. Lancaster.”
York was overcome with gratitude. “Thank you, Mr. Lancaster!”
I, too, was a little surprised and looked at Steven. I’d assumed that with his disdain for me and his long memory, he’d jump at the chance for payback. As the sponsor, he set the rules; blocking me would have been as simple as saying the word.
But he didn’t.
Zachary and the others stood by, none of them rushing Steven. They exchanged glances, a hint of amusement in their eyes.
Steven’s dark eyes flickered over me for a second, then he turned to the middle-aged man beside him. “Let’s go, Zachary.”
“Of course, Mr. Lancaster.” Zachary nodded eagerly, shooting me an amused look before following Steven inside.
The large group departed.
Once they were out of my earshot, Steven instructed Gordon, “Find out if Somania is here.”
Gordon immediately got to work.
Meanwhile, Zachary asked Steven with a smile, “That young woman just now… she looked a bit familiar. Is she an acquaintance of yours, Mr. Lancaster?”
