I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 238

Jonas’s expression stiffened even more, and he dropped my arm.

“Not really friends. We were just classmates in college. I haven’t seen her in years. We just ran into each other today by chance.”

I stared at him, bewildered. “Overseas classmates?”

If I remembered correctly, not long ago, he had been the one to call us friends.

Jonas stood beside me, a flicker of guilt in his eyes, but his tone was sharp.

“So, you’re a widow now. No wonder you’re back to working. But if you’re going to have a job, you should at least act like it. Why are you on such bad terms with your own director?”

My face hardened. He thought Linda was my boss?

Linda let out a sudden, mocking laugh, her eyes landing on the bag in Jonas’s hands.

“I remember that. Isn’t that Zephyra’s? She was carrying it all the way from the office. I wonder what cheap trinket is inside.”

A complex look crossed Jonas’s face. He took the gift bag and shoved it back at me.

“Here, take this back. Don’t give me gifts anymore. We’re not that close.”

Whispers rippled through the crowd. Most of them didn’t know me, but their eyes were all fixed on me, filled with mockery as they watched the spectacle.

I held my gift, my gaze fixed on Jonas, my lips pressed into a tight line.

I was completely caught off guard. I had faced plenty of hostility since my rebirth, but I never expected my own comrade to turn against me.

“You just met her, didn’t you? Are you that eager to cut ties with me?”

His expression flickered. “What do you mean, cut ties? Weren’t we always just classmates? You never contacted me, I never contacted you. I get that you’re recently widowed and desperate for a man, but you shouldn’t let your imagination run wild.”
