It wasn't a question. It was a statement. He had figured it out.
My eyes widened slightly, though I wasn't entirely surprised. The events of the day had proven I was no amateur, and Steven knew Horace was Somania's partner. He wasn't stupid; he could connect the dots. It was just a shame. I had wanted him to find out after the divorce.
I glanced at him, using my free hand to pry his fingers off my wrist. "I never denied being Somania. You were the one who kept denying it."
Steven’s grip remained firm, his eyes locked on mine, his handsome face tense and rigid. "And why did I deny it? Could it be because after you married me, all you ever did was laundry and cook? All you ever asked was whether I’d eaten well or slept well, and nothing else? You married me and hid away all your talents, concealing everything from me."
He was practically seething. "Uncle Julian helped you hide it, you hid your own skills, and you paraded around me every day like some brainless housekeeper. You certainly fooled me. I should praise you for your exquisite acting. You don't belong in design; you belong on a movie set."
"No wonder I felt you'd changed recently. Maybe you were never the Zephyra I thought I knew. Maybe this is your true self. What was your purpose in deceiving the entire Lancaster family? What else have you hidden from me? What else don't I know?"
I was momentarily stunned, completely blindsided by his reaction. Then, a bitter laugh escaped me. I thought he'd be angry at most for being played, but I never imagined he would concoct this entire conspiracy theory.
The Lancaster family didn't allow its women to work. My mother-in-law had warned me before I even married into the family. Once I married him, I had to stay home. He never talked to me about his work, he never let me touch him, we had no marital life. What else was I supposed to do but ask about his meals and daily routine?
And he accused me of fooling him? Hah.
