It wasn’t until I was back at the office that the regret set in. I shouldn’t have blown up at Steven like that. I should have first asked him what favor I had done for him. It could have been useful leverage for the future. A miscalculation.
I gathered my files to report the competition results to Myron. Before I could go to his office, I saw Linda emerge, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She shot me a hateful look, then quickly averted her gaze and returned to her desk to miserably pack her things. The office was empty except for the two of us.
I raised an eyebrow. Seeing her clearing her desk, it seemed she was actually going to honor our bet and resign.
Just as the thought crossed my mind, Linda slammed a file down on her desk and stormed over to me, her long hair flying.
“Zephyra, you knew I was lying, but you didn’t expose me. You just watched me perform like a clown in front of everyone. Was it fun? Are you ecstatic right now? Are you feeling smug?”
She was furious, her eyes blazing red. My expression was placid, and honestly, so was my heart. Linda was just a passerby in my life; she couldn’t stir any emotion in me.
“Are you done?”
My indifference only fueled her rage, and fresh tears streamed down her face. “Zephyra, I have never been so humiliated in my entire life! If you’re such a master, why were you pretending to be a rookie? I was spewing lies right to the main character of the story, and you didn’t even give me a hint! It’s infuriating! You little widow, you’re so annoying. I really, really hate you. But since you’re the person Mr. Taylor was looking for, I lost fair and square. I accept it. I just submitted my resignation to Myron. You won’t have to deal with me anymore.”
With that, she turned to go back to her desk and continue packing.
I found the situation oddly amusing, though my gaze remained serious. “Star Corp. is one of the top firms in the industry. After what happened today, even with a second-place win, you’ll have a hard time finding another job, especially after resigning from here. No one will want to hire you.”
Her sobs grew louder. “You don’t have to spell out my punishment for me.”
