“You got it,” Myron said, unsurprised.
Jacob’s face instantly darkened, his lips pressed into a thin, hard line.
“…”
That shameless bastard. Steven knew perfectly well that Jacob was younger than him, yet he still called him uncle.
I had expected the dinner to be a battlefield between Steven and me, especially after our fight earlier that day. The tension was already palpable.
But to my surprise, the real conflict was between Jacob and Steven. They acted like bitter rivals, downing glass after glass of liquor, completely ignoring their food.
Jacob’s tone was laced with aggression. “Mr. Lancaster, a man who can’t make up his mind is just a cheat. There’s a price to pay for that, wouldn’t you agree?”
Steven’s expression was coolly indifferent. “It’s good that you’re self-aware. Don’t covet what isn’t yours.”
They clinked glasses and drank.
Steven finished his drink with elegance, while Jacob had to force his down. The more he drank, the angrier he became. He slammed his empty glass on the table.
“You’re the one who shouldn’t be coveting her. Some things just don’t belong to you. Forcing it will only end badly.”
Steven remained impassive, his eyes like ice.
“I could say the same to you. You’re old, poor, and powerless. If it weren’t for my wife, you wouldn’t even have the right to sit at this table with me. Forcing things will indeed end badly for you.”
Jacob’s fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white, a vein throbbing in his forehead.
Myron, enjoying the show, eagerly refilled their glasses.
“Come on, come on, less talking, more drinking.”
I sighed, shaking my head slightly.
So, they were fighting over Verna. No wonder Steven wasn’t bothering me; he was preoccupied.
That was fine by me. I didn’t want to talk to him anyway.
I focused on my food, thinking about how I needed to visit Uncle Julian at the hospital after dinner. Since his transfer, I had been so busy with the design competition that I hadn’t had much time to spend with him.
Myron, on the other hand, was having a great time watching the drama unfold, occasionally asking me a question that I answered with a distracted murmur.
By the time I was full, Myron asked who I thought would pass out first and who I would be taking home.
