Steven’s handsome face darkened. “You’re not going to take me home?”
I scrolled through my contacts, searching for Gordon’s number. “Mr. Lancaster, we were at each other’s throats all day,” I said nonchalantly. “The fact that we managed to sit through dinner together is a miracle. Do you really think it’s appropriate for me to drive you home?”
It would make our fight seem pointless. Besides, I knew alcohol gave him terrible stomach pains. After how much he drank tonight, he’d likely need someone to look after him, and that was a job for Gordon. He got paid for overtime, after all.
Steven grabbed my hand, his grip surprisingly strong, and his dark eyes burned into mine. “If you’re going to call someone, call Horace.”
I tried to pull my phone back, not wanting to argue with a drunk, but his grip was like iron. “Let go,” I sighed in frustration. “Why would I call him?”
His voice was rough, laced with an aggressive, domineering edge. “Call him and tell him to stop dreaming. Tell him he’ll never marry you, that you’ll never love him, and that there’s no future for the two of you.”
I stared at him, a mixture of disbelief and alarm on my face. “Are you that drunk? You sound like you’re having a psychotic break.”
Horace didn’t even like me that way. How could he possibly want to marry me? The fact that these words were coming from Steven’s mouth was proof that he was completely wasted.
He stared at me, a stubborn glint in his eyes that wasn’t usually there. “Are you going to call him or not?”
My brow furrowed. “No. Stop using being drunk as an excuse to act crazy. How I talk to Horace is none of your business.”
Steven’s lips thinned into a cold, humorless line. “You’re in love with him.”
I finally wrenched my phone free. “You’re right, I am. What are you going to do about it? I hope it eats you alive.”
His eyes narrowed, a dangerous glint in their depths.
Just as I was about to call Gordon, my phone lit up with an incoming call. It was Horace. His phone access was strictly controlled these days, so a call from him was a rare treat.
