“You should be grateful that this divorce is saving your life. Otherwise, you’d be sitting in a jail cell right now. Don’t think for a second I wouldn’t do it. You know I put your mother and brother in the hospital, don't you? I won’t show you any mercy.”
My voice was low and shaking with fury. “This is your last warning. Don’t you ever touch me again!”
With that, I didn’t bother to straighten my disheveled clothes. I snatched my broken phone off the floor and stormed out. As I pushed through the door, I nearly collided with a waitress who was rushing in, her face etched with concern. “Miss, we heard a loud crash. Is everything alright? Are you okay?”
I bit my lip and kept walking, not bothering to answer. Behind me, I heard her timidly ask, “Sir, are you alright? Do you need me to call an ambulance…?”
I didn’t look back. The moment I was out of the restaurant, I hailed a cab.
Staring down at the shattered screen of my phone, I pushed aside my anger and frustration with Steven and tried to power it on. Thankfully, it still worked. As soon as it booted up, I saw a flood of notifications. Horace had called several times and sent a string of texts.
“Zephyra, why did the call suddenly drop? Is someone giving you trouble?”
“Zephyra, I can’t get through to your phone. If you see this, send me a message or your location…”
There were several more, but I didn’t have time to read them. I immediately tried calling him back, but it just rang and rang with no answer.
Frowning, I tried a few more times, but still got nothing. Had they taken his phone away again?
I sent him a text instead: “Horace, I’m fine. My phone just took a tumble. Don’t worry about me. Focus on preparing for the finals. I’ll be there to cheer you on.”
It was all Steven’s fault. If he hadn’t thrown my phone in a fit of rage, Horace wouldn’t be so worried. I just hoped it hadn’t affected his performance.
I sighed and scrolled through the news feed on my phone. An article about the Superstar Idol competition caught my eye. A clip of Horace dancing was trending at number one, with over thirty thousand comments and three hundred thousand shares from his adoring fans. The comments were overwhelmingly positive, with many predicting he would debut as the next big thing.
