My heart sank. I hung up without another word, not even bothering to change out of my pajamas before throwing on a coat and rushing to the hospital.
In my past life, I had died of stomach cancer and spent a long time in hospitals. I had seen people die from acute gastric perforation.
Steven did have a bad stomach, and drinking often gave him pain, but I never thought it was this serious. He seemed fine when I left.
If he died, would I be legally responsible?
However, when I arrived at the hospital, I was directed to the inpatient gastroenterology department.
I looked at the man grinning slyly in front of me and cracked my knuckles. “I thought he was about to go into surgery, on the verge of death,” I said with a saccharine smile. “What’s he doing here?”
Myron rubbed his hands together and winked.
“You got here fast. Didn’t even change. So you do care about Steven after all…”
“Okay, okay, don’t be mad. I wasn’t completely lying. Steven’s stomach really is hurting. He drank too much tonight, and the pain was so bad he couldn’t even make it out of the restaurant. The staff had to call an ambulance for him.”
“So I might have exaggerated a little, but you wouldn’t have come otherwise. You’re so cold to him now. How could you just leave him alone like that? Something bad could have happened.”
“And you know I’m cold and heartless, yet you asked me to come take care of him? Aren’t you afraid I’ll finish the job?” I said, my smile vanishing. I turned to leave, but Myron grabbed my arm, his tone suddenly serious.
“Hey, I’m not okay with that. You’re still married. Even if you hate him, you have to show some basic human decency when he’s in trouble. And it’s not like he’s been that terrible to you, has he?”
“I don’t know about everything, but I know about the ridiculous dowry you demanded when you got married. If I were Steven, I never would have agreed to it. You were practically advertising that you had another man in your heart. But a proud man like Steven still married you and met all your demands. He never gave you a hard time after you were married. For that alone, don’t you think you owe him?”
I turned to look at him. Myron’s face was a mask of righteousness, and for a moment, I was speechless.
