My heart sank back into the abyss. Horace had left the hospital against medical advice? No wonder he had returned so much earlier than in my past life.
Dr. Millian hadn’t spelled it out, but hers was a top-tier private hospital that catered to an elite clientele. Ordinary people couldn’t even get through the door. Horace must have had a serious falling out with them for her to require me to “clear the way” before she could help.
“Okay, I’ll do it as quickly as I can. I’ll call you back once everything is sorted out.”
The line went dead, and the dark screen of my phone reflected my pale, frantic face.
The only reason Horace had been admitted to that hospital in the first place was because of Steven.
Which meant that now, I needed Steven’s connections for Dr. Millian to help, for Horace’s leg to be saved.
A lump formed in my throat, and I couldn’t seem to breathe. My relationship with Steven was already in tatters. We were on the brink of a bitter divorce, and just this morning, I had callously dismissed the woman he cared for.
We were supposed to sign the papers tomorrow, and he had made it clear he never wanted to see me again. To go to him now, begging for help, would be the ultimate humiliation.
And yet, I threw on my coat without a second thought. As I grabbed my phone, my mind in a turmoil, I tripped over a chair and fell hard. A sharp pain shot through my body, and tears sprang to my eyes. A glance at the clock told me I only had forty minutes left. There was no time to waste. I scrambled back to my feet and limped out the door.
A light rain had started to fall, but I didn’t have time to go back for an umbrella. I ran to my car and drove. By the time I reached the villa, the drizzle had turned into a torrential downpour.
The cold rain soaked me to the bone. I automatically reached for the keypad to enter the security code, but my fingers hovered over the last digit. I stopped and pressed the doorbell instead.
I was here to beg, not to play the lady of the manor. I needed to show some humility.
