Steven’s face turned to stone, the lines of his jaw tightening. “You came here for Horace?” he bit out, each word a block of ice.
I stared at his handsome, unforgiving face, my body trembling with cold, my fingers numb. “I only have ten minutes to get an answer. I’m begging you, can you please help me?”
“This level of humility doesn’t suit you,” Steven sneered, a flicker of fire igniting in the depths of his eyes. He pulled his hand away, a cold, cruel smile twisting his lips. “Funny, isn’t it? Last night, when I was in the hospital, you were the picture of calm indifference. You couldn’t have cared less. But now that it’s Horace, you’re so distraught you can barely function.”
Steven was arrogant, proud, and at times, so petty it defied comprehension. In our past life, he demanded to be treated like a god, to be the absolute center of my universe. Even in death, he would have expected to be my first priority.
I had given him that in our past life. But in this one, I had defied him at every turn. He had just witnessed my cold indifference to his own crisis, and now, with Horace’s life on the line, my raw, desperate panic was on full display. The contrast was not lost on him, and it was clearly fueling his anger.
I ignored his taunts, biting my lip. “Can we put our personal issues aside for now? Name your price. Whatever you want. Even if it’s money, I’ll find a way to get it for you. Just please, help him get through this.”
The frost on his handsome face thickened, his expression growing even more mocking. “My business deals start in the nine-figure range. How much can you possibly offer me?”
I froze. I had expected him to ask for money, maybe ten million at most, a sum that would have crushed me. But to start at a hundred million… it was unthinkable.
“I… I don’t have that kind of money…”
“Then we have nothing to talk about. I’m getting divorced tomorrow. I’m in no mood to save some irrelevant person.”
