I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 711

Rachel ran out of the hospital, but before she could hail a cab, a cool voice called her name from behind.

The voice was cold, yet familiar.

“Verna!” Rachel's anger flared. She spun around, teeth gritted, only to freeze.

Verna was wearing an off-white coat. Her usually pure and beautiful face was marked with several bruises, as if she'd been badly beaten. Her eyes were icy, and her delicate features, usually so striking, now carried a hint of gloom.

She didn't mention being taught a lesson or being rescued, simply stood there with her arms crossed, radiating an air of arrogance.

“Is Zephyra awake?”

Rachel snapped back to reality, her eyes filled with anger and suspicion.

“Are you still trying to hurt Zephyra?”

Verna’s gaze fell on Rachel's face. “What are you talking about? Aren't you on my side? Taking care of Zephyra is our job.”

“Nonsense! Zephyra is my friend! You tricked me, you're the one who ruined everything!” Rachel's fury boiled over. She raised her hand to slap Verna, but her wrist was caught in a viselike grip just inches from its target. Verna stepped closer, her eyes boring into Rachel's.

“Don't pretend with me,” Verna said. “I don't believe for a second that you feel nothing watching how much Horace loves Zephyra. Deep down, you probably want her dead even more than I do.”

“It's ironic, really. She saved your life, and when your family was in trouble, she was the first to help. But you betrayed her. She's so proud; I doubt she'll ever want anything to do with you again, right?”

A flicker of shame crossed Rachel's face. Her eyes red, she violently shook off Verna's hand.

“Don't lump me in with you. I will never hurt her again! And I'm warning you—I don't care if you have some foresight or other special abilities, but you are not to brainwash me again, and you will not harm Zephyra or Horace!”

“My life isn't that important. For my friends, I'm willing to pay a price you can't even imagine!”

With that threat, she turned to leave.
