That afternoon, I went back to the manor with Mr. Lancaster Sr. After having lunch with Grandpa, I went upstairs for a nap.
As expected, Steven followed me up as if he owned the place. I coldly blocked his way, but he propped his hand on the doorframe, using just enough force to keep a small gap open.
I gave him a cold look. “I'm taking a nap. What do you want?”
Unfazed by my question, Steven replied matter-of-factly, “I'm keeping you company!”
His entitled attitude infuriated me. “Sir, let me make this clear. We are ex-husband and ex-wife. There is no legitimate reason for us to be in the same room. Why don't you go find somewhere else to be?”
As I spoke, I tried to pry his fingers off one by one. Aware of my pregnancy, he had no choice but to reluctantly let go.
Just as I was about to shut the door, he sneakily slid his foot into the gap at the bottom.
“You don't have to let me stay with you, but I'm the baby's father, and he needs me!”
“...”
That mouth of Steven's wasn't just good at arguing; he was a master of twisting logic!
He made it sound so nice, telling me to use the baby to control him, but this jerk had used our child as an excuse to manipulate me plenty of times!
I smiled at him. “Fine. Why don't you ask her right now? If she agrees, I'll let you in!”
Steven's brow furrowed, leaving him speechless.
After getting rid of Steven, I shut the door and went to sleep. Maybe it was the pregnancy, but I slept so deeply that when I opened my eyes again, the sky outside was already dark.
I sat up and realized someone was next to me. Steven, seemingly woken by my movement, opened his eyes. He wrapped an arm around my waist. “You're awake. Want to sleep a little longer?”
Perhaps because he had just woken up, his voice was a bit husky and nasal, almost like he was whining sweetly. The sound made my heart skip a beat!
“You… How did you get in here?”
My shock gave way to anger, and I shoved him away.
Steven rubbed his temples, a look of exasperation on his face. “You have the nerve to ask? You're such a restless sleeper. The blanket fell off I don't know how many times. It's a good thing I was here watching, or you'd be catching a cold right now.”
Steven wasn't lying; I was a restless sleeper. But that was no excuse for him to barge in.
“I don't need you to take care of me. Mina can do it!”
Mina was a maid at the manor. She'd dropped out of middle school, and though she was around my age, she was mature, level-headed, and very reliable.
We got along well, so Grandpa had assigned her to look after me personally.
