I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra and Steven) novel Chapter 766

I’d crossed paths with Queena in this life. She was the type of person who became obsessive in her relationships, never caring if anyone liked her, only whether she could have the man she wanted.

Thinking back to my past life, she had proclaimed she wanted to be with Steven, but it was clearly one-sided. After all, I didn't think Steven was crazy enough to fall for someone so controlling and extreme.

Now that I thought about it, blaming Steven for everything wasn't fair to him either.

I gently patted the hand Steven had resting on my waist. “This isn't all your fault. Don't be so hard on yourself.”

Perhaps, when I wasn't looking, Steven had cried many times, too.

He turned his hand over to clasp mine. “Zephyra, this time, I will protect her, even if it costs me my life!”

I cut him off without hesitation. “Don't say that. Just figure out why Queena came back to the country and be on your guard.”

Even if I wasn't planning on raising the child with him, I didn't want my baby to be born without a father.

In my eyes, Queena was the biggest threat. As long as we kept her at bay, my child could be born safely.

At my words, Steven suddenly smiled, his voice hoarse. “Alright, I’ll listen to you.”

I said no more and closed my eyes to rest.

When I opened them again, it was already eight o’clock.

The space next to me in bed was empty, and I slowly sat up. These past few days, with Steven holding me as I slept, my sleep had been exceptionally peaceful. That, combined with pregnancy-induced drowsiness, meant I spent nearly half my time asleep.

As I got out of bed to draw the curtains, I noticed a pair of pink socks on my feet and paused.

Tess smiled. “It is. Please have a seat at the table, and I’ll bring out the food.”

I nodded.

When Tess had set out the dishes, I saw only one set of cutlery and looked at her, puzzled. “Where is he? Isn't he eating?”

Usually, Steven woke up early to handle some company business in the morning, but no matter how late I slept, he would always wait to eat with me.

Tess smiled faintly. “Are you worried about Mr. Lancaster, Ma'am?”

Tess and I were around the same age, so we usually spoke informally.

“You're overthinking it. It was just a casual question.”
