“Oh!” Tess drew out the word. “Since you were just asking casually, then it doesn’t really matter if I tell you or not, right?”
She raised her eyebrows at me, clearly teasing.
“…”
I picked up my fork and started to eat without another word.
With Steven gone, I was actually glad for the peace and quiet. At least I wouldn't have him constantly nagging me to eat this or that.
For some reason, though, it felt like something was missing.
Tess served me a bowl of porridge. “Mr. Lancaster went to the office for a meeting. He said he’d be back this afternoon! If you miss him, Ma'am, you could always video call him!”
Tess’s voice had a natural sweetness to it, making her sound like a girl fresh out of high school.
I put down my fork, my expression flat. “He can stay away for a month, for all I care.”
I took a spoonful of the porridge, and it immediately tasted different—richer and sweeter than usual, and much more delicious.
“Tess, how did you make this porridge today? It’s amazing!”
Tess blinked her wide eyes at me. “You’d have to ask Mr. Lancaster about that, Ma’am. He’s the one who made it.”
“He probably felt bad about not being here for breakfast and was worried you wouldn't eat much, so he thought making porridge would encourage you to eat more.”
I was slightly taken aback. When I’d woken up around five, Steven must have gotten up shortly after. He had been staying up so late recently and still getting up so early—was he taking care of himself?
Steven must have been swamped at work, because it wasn't until four in the afternoon that I heard a car pull up to the villa.
I had been reading on the living room sofa, wrapped in a blanket, and had dozed off at some point, only to be awakened by the sound of the car.
Just as I sat up, Steven walked in. He was carrying a purple cake box, which I instantly recognized as being from my favorite custom bakery.
Their cakes were far more expensive than others and notoriously hard to get. You had to order in advance, and during busy periods, the wait could be over a month.
I had been so busy making money before that I never had the time to buy one.
I stared at the cake, and it would be a lie to say I wasn't craving it. My appetite had been surprisingly strong since getting pregnant, and I wanted to eat all sorts of things.
