While I was still wondering if my eyes were deceiving me, Ryan was already shouting.
“Well, well, Steven! What are you doing sneaking into my house in the middle of the night? What are you planning? Trying to get some secret revenge on us?”
Uncle Julian, who had been sitting stiffly on the sofa, now stood up, a defiant and disdainful look on his face, as if daring him to try anything.
Steven, who was always so composed and serious, actually had a roguish charm with a baseball cap on.
He glanced at me first, then his gaze shifted to Ryan, and his expression hardened. “Revenge on you? Why would I need to be sneaky about it?”
Ryan was left speechless.
The head of security looked between us and Steven, utterly confused. “You… you know each other?”
I was about to speak, but Steven beat me to it. “She’s my wife. We just had a little disagreement.”
I frowned. No wonder Steven was so successful in business; he could lie without batting an eye.
Ryan crossed his arms, shooting Steven a contemptuous look.
“Steven, did you sleep through English class? It’s *ex-wife*. You two are divorced. Right now, you’re illegally trespassing.”
A cold smirk played on Steven’s lips. “I came to see my wife and my child. Is there a problem with that?”
Hearing this, the security manager, who had been trying to make sense of the situation, seemed to understand. His brow, once furrowed, relaxed.
He looked at me and said earnestly, “Ms. Jones, we understand that family disputes happen, but your husband’s method is really not advisable. He climbed over the fence behind the villa. What if he had gotten hurt?”
Climbed the fence?
He turned to me. “Ma’am, Mr. Lancaster was just worried about you. The butler wouldn’t let him in, so he had to resort to this. You don’t know, but Mr. Lancaster has been waiting in the car all day!”
It suddenly clicked. That car I saw this afternoon was Steven’s. He had been right there, watching me.
Had Steven followed me all the way from his mansion?
Gordon went on, “And lately, Mr. Lancaster has been working into the early hours of the morning just to free up more time to spend with you. The other day, he fainted at the office, and as soon as he woke up in the hospital, he went right back to work.”
No wonder Steven had looked so exhausted those past few days. At the time, I was so focused on pushing him away that I hadn't considered it. Now, thinking back, I felt a pang of guilt.
I looked at Steven, at a loss for words.
Ryan’s eyes darted between me and Steven. He pulled me back a step. “Don’t let him fool you. Remember how he used to treat you? If you ask me, he’s only pretending to be nice now because of the baby. He’s after the child.”
