Nelson left without a backward glance. I pulled Rachel a few steps aside.
Rachel shouted at the burly man's back, "You deserved it!"
The man clutched the card and stood up, his eyes locked on me and Rachel.
"This is all your fault. You turned him against me."
I was truly speechless. "Are you serious? Nelson just said it was your own fault. It has nothing to do with us."
The man refused to listen, his voice cold. "Fine. Just you wait. If I'm going down, I'm taking you with me."
"I heard Nelson on the phone. When the job's done, he's going to throw you both into the sea to feed the fish. So you'd better enjoy talking now, because you won't get another chance."
My heart sank. That sounded exactly like something Queena would do.
Steven probably thought marrying Queena would save us, but he had no idea she never intended for us to live.
Seeing the color drain from our faces, the burly man looked triumphant. "Just wait. I'll be there to watch you get thrown in."
His voice was chilling, and the look he gave me was so fierce it was as if he wanted to devour me.
I could feel his hatred.
It would be a lie to say I wasn't scared. But at least Nelson had kicked him out. Otherwise, I wouldn't have dared to sleep, day or night.
After the man left, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. Rachel spat at his retreating figure. "He's so disgusting. I've never met anyone so creepy in my life. Don't you think so, Zephyra?"
I nodded slightly. It wasn't that people like him were rare, but that the circles we moved in were relatively clean.
Rachel nudged me with her shoulder. "Zephyra, what's wrong? You seem distracted."
I shook my head. "It's nothing."
