Amelia sighed, “You were mad?”

Sometimes she felt like Nina was going to drive her crazy.

“Mommy, hold me,” Nina said, rubbing her eyes and stretching out her arms.

“Nina, can you be a good girl tomorrow?” she asked, lifting Nina up and beginning to talk about tomorrow’s plans.

Amelia went on, “If you’re good tomorrow, I’ll pick you up from school and we’ll go out for dinner-I’m meeting someone, do you want to come?”

“Yes!” Nina loved any excuse to go out and eat.

She was totally on board.

Seeing her excitement, Amelia made a serious pinky promise with her.

She said, “Tomorrow at school, no running away. You have to be a good girl. I only take good girls out to

eat.”

“Nina good!” Nina declared.

Amelia said, “Really? Well, when I pick you up, I’ll ask your teacher if you were a good girl.”

She managed to get Nina through her bedtime routine, and Benjamin still wasn’t home.

Nina was so tired she could barely keep her eyes open, but she stubbornly refused to fall asleep.

She asked, “Mommy, where Daddy?”

Nina used to sleep with Benjamin too-besides Amelia, she’d look for him to sleep with.

Amelia held her, gently patting her back, and said, “Dadly’s working-he works to make money to take care of you. Do you want Daddy to make money?”

Nina nestled in Amelia’s arms and nodded sleepily. “Yeah. Daddy buy toy.”

Even though she agreed that Benjamin should work, a moment later she asked where he was again.

Amelia kissed her cheek and softly started humming a llaby, Slowly, the two of them drifted off to sleep.

A while later, Benjamin finally finished work and came ome.

He didn’t go straight to Amelia’s room-instead, he showered and put on his pajamas in his own room first.

Amelia’s door was unlocked.

Benjamin turned the handle quietly and stepped inside

Nina couldn’t sleep with any light on, so Amelia had only left a very dim nightlight on.

Benjamin walked over in the soft glow.

He leaned down, looking at the two sleeping figures, both sound asleep.

Nina had rolled out of Amelia’s arms and was sleeping right next to the wall.

Benjamin glanced at Nina, then bent and kissed Amelia

Amelia let out a soft murmur in her sleep.

It sounded strangely like Nina.

Benjamin looked at her for a moment, then kissed her again.

He kissed her for a moment before making himself stop

Usually, Nina slept in the middle, with Amelia on one side and him on the other.

This time, since Nina had rolled away on her own, Benjamin didn’t move her back.

He just pulled the green dinosaur-patterned blanket over her, and then lay down beside Amelia.

The family of three settled in for the night, their steady breaths rising and falling in a quiet, harmonious rhythm.

The next morning, fully recharged, Nina was the first one awake.

When she woke up, she hit her head on the wall.

This made her very unhappy!

She lifted her chubby hand and gave the wall several angry pats.

After getting back at the wall, she turned and saw Benjamin and Amelia sleeping in each other’s arms- without her-and that made her even more unhappy.

She quickly crawled over and squeezed her chubby little body right between them.

All her wiggling soon woke Amelia up.

Benjamin was still asleep, since he’d gone to bed late and didn’t get enough sleep.

“Shhh,” Amelia whispered. “Daddy’s still asleep. We can’t wake him up. Come on, Nina, let’s get you dressed. We have to go.”

As she reached for Nina’s outfit, she noticed the red mark on Nina’s forehead.

“Nina, what happened to your head?” she asked, pointing at her forehead. “Why is it red?”
