“Daddy, get mimo?” she asked, touching her eye gingerly.

Seeing her touch it, Benjamin paused. “Daddy doesn’t have a mirror.”

Nina ordered without hesitation, “Buy.”

“Alright. I’ll buy you one later,” Benjamin said, trying to brush it off.

She’s so picky about her little face.

If she sees it in a mirror, she’ll throw a huge fit.

“Nina, do you want to play with the boys?” he asked, deliberately handing her off to the older boys who had followed them to distract her.

Nina looked at them and immediately stretched out her arms. “Hold!”

Seeing her open arms, Lucien and Barry hesitated for a second.

Nelson, who followed Nina most closely, looked at her black eye, pressed his lips together, and stepped forward to try to pick her up, even though he knew he couldn’t.

Thankfully, Benjamin was sensible.

“You’re still too small. You can’t lift her,” he told Nelson plainly.

Then he looked down at Nina. “Nina, walk by yourself.”

Nina puffed out her cheeks.

Barry was furious, too.

Nelson clenched his little fists.

The three boys were seething, but Nina herself had climbed onto a hallway chair and started playing.

Lucien told Barry and Nelson to watch Nina.

He walked off to where the adults were gathered to see how they were handling the situation.

The parents of the three bullies looked grim.

One father, Brennan Ward, wearing a black tank top, had a menacing look in his eyes.

“Look, don’t push it,” he snarled. “Kids roughhouse all the time, and you’re dragging us here just to milk us for money.

“Fine, since the cops are here, I’ll let you have this one.

“But don’t get greedy.

“And all this talk about ‘bullying’? Wanting a note in my kid’s record? I’d like to see any of you try.”

Brennan’s tone was full of malice.

But none of the gathered parents were intimidated. Jerry’s grandparents pointed at Brennan and shouted back, “You think it’s okay to hit Jerry? Let me tell you, we aren’t gonna let this slide!”
