As she glanced at Daniel, who was deeply engrossed in downing his booze, a mischievous glint sparkled in her eyes. She reached out and gently tugged at his sleeve, her voice soft and sweet like honey.

“Un-coo Dan’el… juice… Nina… juice! Un-coo Dan’el, get juice!”

Nina still recalled the sugary delight of juice. It was simply the best!

There were cans in the fridge at home, but Amelia always said no.

Now, seeing Daniel looking all dazed, this little imp hatched a sneaky plan.

She kept pestering him nonstop.

Daniel’s mind was already foggy from the alcohol.

He pushed himself up from the sofa, swaying a bit. “Okay, I’ll get you a juice. Anything else, sweetie?”

Nina’s chubby fingers started counting. “Cookies… chips… candy!”

Daniel just nodded and mumbled, “Sure thing.”

It wasn’t long before he returned with a can of juice and a mountain of snacks.

Nina promptly forgot about whatever she was supposed to do and demanded that Daniel turn on the

cartoons.

In the quiet of the night, wearing just a tiny nightie, Nina curled up on the floor, her eyes glued to the big TV screen.

One hand clutched the juice can, and the other stuffed a cookie into her mouth. She looked like she was loving it!

Meanwhile, heartbroken Daniel kept muttering to himself in a pained voice.

“I’m such a jerk! How could I have been so stupid to mix her up… Sorry, sorry…”

Just the thought of the hurtful words he’d said to Alice earlier that day made his chest tighten with remorse.

For the rest of the night, one was wallowing in misery, and the other was in snack-filled heaven.

Nina felt sorry for Daniel and wanted to cheer him up.

But he was like a brick wall. He just wouldn’t listen to her babbling!

Since she couldn’t make him feel better, Nina would watch the TV for a few minutes and then scurry over to give Daniel a hug.

The poor little thing was running herself ragged!

By the break of dawn, her eyes were red and itchy from staring at the TV, and her head was throbbing. To top it off, her tummy was feeling a bit uncomfortable from all those snacks and juice.

“Un-coo Dan’el… Nina go!”

Nina quickly covered the juice can and empty snack bags with a blanket. Then she gave Daniel’s sleeping face a gentle pat and tiptoed away.

She hadn’t walked more than a few feet down the hallway when she saw Amelia rushing towards her, her face pale with worry.

Amelia had been on some medication lately, which made her sleep like a log.

It was only when the sun started to peek through the curtains that she realized Nina was gone.

She was terrified!

She searched the room frantically, then dashed out without even bothering to put on her slippers.

When Amelia finally spotted Nina in the hallway, the tension in her body melted away.

“Nina! Why didn’t you wake me up?” she spoke in a hurry.

In a few quick strides, Amelia rushed over and scooped Nina up in her arms. “Sweetie, remember what Mommy said? If I’m not up in the morning, you can wake me up.”

Nina blinked those big, adorable eyes and gave her mommy a smooch. “Mommy… Nina so luve you!”

After staying up late playing, seeing Amelia hurry over to hug her, Nina felt all cozy inside.

She just adored telling her mom how much she loved her.

With her sugary-sweet voice, she’d spill out those love words daily.

Even though Amelia had heard it a million times, each time still made her heart flutter with happiness.

“You’re such a little sweetheart, always making Mommy happy,” she said, smiling as she rubbed her face against Nina’s chubby cheek.

There they were, standing in the hallway. More accurately, right outside Benjamin’s room.

Benjamin had opened the door and watched them for a bit in silence.

Amelia sensed a pair of eyes on her and turned to look.

Her gaze met Benjamin’s.

“Morning,” she greeted politely.

Then she took Nina’s chubby hand and made her wave. “Say hi to Daddy, honey.”

Nina blinked and waved her little hand. “Daddy! Morning!”

“Yeah, morning,” Benjamin replied.
