Before York could speak, Claudia cut in. "Since Mr. Ferguson, members of the James family, and everyone else are here, there are a few things I must clarify."

Claudia glanced at York, then fixed her gaze on Sherlyn and Ann's brother and sister-in-law.

Her expression turned serious. "Mrs. Quinn, I will say this one last time in front of everyone: your niece, Ann, is a murderer. She deserves to be punished by the law."

Sherlyn's face flushed with humiliation, but she held her tongue. Though she pitied her niece, she didn't want Claudia announcing to the world that Ann was a killer.

Claudia's lips curved into a sarcastic smile. "Mrs. Quinn, after your niece's relationship with York was broken up by Old Mr. Ferguson, she went abroad and drugged a married man, hoping to marry into a wealthy family with a child. When that didn't work out, she was forced to live with an abusive alcoholic for several years. After returning to the country, she knowingly became Mr. Ferguson's mistress."

Claudia deliberately aired Ann's dirty laundry to embarrass Sherlyn.

"Mrs. Quinn, I was actually willing to step aside for your niece," Claudia continued. "Unfortunately for her, right after Mr. Ferguson and I divorced, she was found guilty of murder. It seems she wasn't fated to join the Ferguson family after all."

Sherlyn's facial muscles tensed as she struggled to maintain her composure.

"Mrs. Quinn, the person who sent your niece to prison was Mr. Ferguson, not me," Claudia declared. "I'm begging you, please stop coming after me. If you and the James family have a grievance, take it up with Mr. Ferguson. He has the power. This has nothing to do with me!"

After finishing, she turned to York. "Mr. Ferguson, why don't you tell everyone if I'm right or not?"

By publicly recounting Ann's crimes and then pushing York into the spotlight, Claudia had effectively removed herself from the equation. The faces of Sherlyn and Ann's relatives were burning with shame. Celia didn't dare make another sound, and the rest of the crowd fell silent.
