His gaze was utterly sincere. “Marriage is a vow for life. We promised to be together forever.”

Her eyes filled with contempt. “I’m sure you said the same thing to Ann James and her son, didn’t you?”

York shook his head. “I made Ann a promise, but it’s not what you think.”

He tried to explain, “How I feel about you and how I feel about Ann are different. I don’t love Ann. I have no desire for her.”

Before he could finish, Claudia cut him off with a cold question. “York, do you love me?”

The question stunned him into silence.
