Claudia scrambled out of York’s car and immediately recognized her surroundings. Not far away, the blades of a helicopter whirred, filling the air with a deafening roar.

Mark and several bodyguards stood respectfully by the helicopter’s open door.

Panic seized her.

She struggled, backing away. “York, I have to work tomorrow. Where on earth are you taking me?”

His dark eyes bored into her, but he said nothing. He grabbed her wrist and began pulling her toward the helicopter with great force.

Unable to break free, Claudia dropped to the ground, squatting.

Afraid of hurting her, York was forced to stop.

She looked up at him, her voice trembling. “What are you doing in the middle of the night?”

York bent down and forcibly pulled her to her feet. He wrapped one arm around her waist and used the other to cup the back of her neck, forcing her to look at him.

“Tell me,” he demanded, his voice sounding as if it were being squeezed from his chest. “What is it you see in Hugh?”

“Claudia, tell me what you like about him. I’ll change. I’ll adopt all his good qualities.”

“You can make demands of me,” he said, “but you can’t choose him!”

They stood face to face, so close she could see the madness in his eyes. It terrified her.
