Sewell nearly choked on his son’s words. Fortunately, Wendy arrived just in time to prevent the argument from escalating.

“York,” Wendy said gently, “you’ve always been so level-headed. You never do things that result in a lose-lose situation. Please, reconsider your decision about the Quinn Group.”

York’s tone was firm. “Don’t worry, Mom. Terminating the contract with the Quinn Group was always part of my plan. Last week, I already benchmarked a publicly-traded company to replace them. I will personally recoup any losses Ferguson Group incurs.”

Hearing that his son had a contingency plan, Sewell’s explosive temper cooled slightly, but his words remained harsh.

“Did you not see her at the police station?” he taunted his son. “Claudia left with Hugh right in front of you.”

“I told you back then to get rid of that Xie woman and have a child, but you refused to listen,” Sewell continued. “Now, even if you handed Ferguson Group to Claudia on a silver platter, she wouldn't come back. You need to kill that hope once and for all!”

Wendy, seeing the growing anguish on her son’s face, finally managed to persuade her husband to leave.

After everyone had gone, only York and Mark remained in the office.

York braced himself with both hands on the desk, his body feeling heavy and weak. He lowered his head, shoulders slumping. “Get my medication.”

Mark quickly retrieved the medicine from a drawer under the coffee table. He couldn’t help but think how cruel the Chairman was, deliberately saying things to twist the knife when his son was already in such a state.

Mark brought the pills over, but York snatched the bottle from his hand. Twisting the cap off, he haphazardly shook several painkillers into his palm and swallowed them dry.

“You can go now,” York said, sinking back into his chair and closing his eyes to recover.
