“So, Claudia, what's this I hear about you and York suddenly calling off the wedding?” Rae Blake asked, her tone casual as she carefully selected some seafood.
Claudia sighed, deliberately lowering her voice. “York's in love with someone else. There's nothing I can do.”
Her voice wasn't loud, but it was just loud enough for Ann's brother and sister-in-law to hear.
Rae Blake feigned surprise. “Seriously?”
Claudia nodded, a troubled look on her face. “He's been waiting for his first love. He's practically at war with his family over it.”
The two exchanged a knowing glance.
Rae tried to console her. “But the Fergusons are the most powerful family in Capital City! York is the sole heir, he's handsome, and he's incredibly generous. Any woman lucky enough to marry him would have her entire family set for life. You can't just let an opportunity like that slip away.”
Claudia hummed in agreement, then said slowly, “He is very generous to the people around him. Before the wedding was called off, he not only paid off my family's massive debts but also bought my parents a house in the city center. He deposits a six-figure allowance into their account every month. Any one of the gifts he's given me could be sold for enough money to keep me comfortable for the rest of my life...”
Rae patted Claudia's shoulder. “Don't you worry, sis. I'll help you figure something out. Isn't your birthday coming up? What's the date again?”
Out of the corner of her eye, Claudia glanced at Fiona and Backus, who were not far away. “November eighth. The party's at The Imperial Hotel. You have to be there.”
Rae cleared her throat. “On your birthday, I'll make sure you and York seal the deal. If you're lucky enough to get pregnant with the next Ferguson heir, you can use the baby to secure your place in that top-tier family and live a life of luxury.”
Claudia said nothing. This part wasn't in the script she and Rae had “rehearsed.”
