With York and Peter's older brother mediating, the two families decided that Peter and Darleen would get engaged at the end of the year.
Just like that, Darleen and Peter's future was settled.
After the Louis family left, Darleen still felt a bit dazed. Had she really just been talked into getting engaged?
Outside the Ferguson Mansion, Peter hadn't left. The two men sat in the car, windows down, each lighting a cigarette.
"You took a few whacks from my grandpa's cane. Don't you need to go to the hospital?" York asked.
Peter grinned widely. "Since when did you learn to care about people?"
York's gaze drifted out the window. He smoked in silence, saying nothing more.
Peter studied York's reaction. "I've already decided. I'm going to marry Darleen as soon as she graduates," he said. "You and Claudia need to hurry up. You don't want the younger sister getting married before the older brother."
At the mention of Claudia's name, York's eyelashes fluttered.
Him and Claudia... it was impossible in this lifetime.
Peter sensed York's mood dip. He rubbed his knee with one hand while holding his cigarette with the other. "York, be honest with me. What the hell happened between you and Claudia?"
A few days before they were supposed to get their marriage license, the two had been inseparable. But ever since Claudia left him at city hall, things had been off. He had tried to get answers from Claudia a few times, with no luck. He had asked York several times, but York refused to say anything. The suspense was killing him.
York turned to look at Peter. "The wedding was canceled. What do you think happened?"
Claudia had said he didn't love her. It wasn't just Claudia; everyone around him believed he didn't love her. There was a time when even he himself had believed it. They were childhood friends, and Claudia had always relied on him. He used to be so sure that no matter what happened, Claudia would never leave him.
But in the end, she had left him with such finality.
The moment he lost her, his world had crumbled. And yet, she seemed to be doing just fine.
