Just as Darleen was leading Mrs. Quinn and Ramona out the door, Selene swayed, nearly collapsing.
"Hamlin, your daughter took photos of us," she said, her voice frantic. "You can't call the police."
He quickly helped her to the bed. "I'll let them off the hook this time, but I won't forget this."
Just then, the police officers who had been dispatched knocked on the door. Hamlin and Selene lied, claiming it was just a misunderstanding during a couple's quarrel, and received a stern lecture from the officers.
After they left, Selene sat on the bed and burst into tears.
Covering her face, she sobbed, "Hamlin, your wife and daughter caught us red-handed and took pictures. Even if I give you a son, we'll be too ashamed to show our faces. Miss Ferguson is your daughter's friend; she saw everything. What if she tells her family? What if Mr. Ferguson questions your character and refuses to do you any favors for Ann? What will I do then? I've been with you for over a decade with no official status, I've had several miscarriages trying to give you a son, and what do I get? Beaten half to death on the floor by your wife and her sisters. What have I been doing all these years?"
…
Hamlin sat on the edge of the bed, his own face swollen and his body aching, yet he pulled Selene into his arms. "Don't worry, Selene," he assured her. "Now that it's all out in the open, we don't have to hide anymore. You just rest here and take care of yourself. I'll figure out how to get your niece out of the detention center first."
Selene tested him. "Hamlin, I can handle being wronged, but I will not let my son be shamed along with me. Get my niece out, then divorce your wife and give me a proper title. I won't let my son be a bastard."
