Time flew, and the end of the year arrived.
With only a week left before the New Year, York received news that Claudia was coming back.
In the CEO's office at the Ferguson Group, Darleen reminded her brother, "Claudia's flight gets in tonight. Have you booked a room for her welcome-home party?"
York's dark eyes were fixed on the time in the bottom corner of his computer screen. "I have something on tonight. Let's book the party for tomorrow night."
She would be exhausted after a long flight, he thought. She needed time to rest and get over her jet lag.
Since his last visit to see her in Caledon, they hadn't met, not even exchanging a single message. Even so, he found himself clicking on her chat profile countless times a day. His heart seized every time he heard someone mention her name. Day or night, whenever he had a spare moment, his thoughts drifted uncontrollably to her.
After so many days of torment, he was finally going to see her.
York felt a restless energy surge through him. He stood up and went to the liquor cabinet to pour himself a drink.
The next morning, a Saturday, York stood outside the Watkins family home. His impressive height was accentuated by a casual suit and a long, black overcoat that gave him a sharp, formidable aura. He paced for a while, hesitating, before finally summoning the courage to ring the doorbell.
Claudia opened the door wearing a set of fluffy cartoon fleece pajamas. She was visibly stunned to see York standing there.
He stood frozen on the doorstep, his gaze fixed on her. She hadn't changed at all. She was still as beautiful as ever, making it impossible to look away.
Claudia grew uncomfortable under his intense stare.
After a moment's hesitation, she stepped outside and gently pulled the door shut behind her. "York, what are you doing here?"
York's eyes flickered to the closed door behind her before he silently refocused on her face. "I came to tell you we've arranged a welcome-home party for you tonight," he said.
Claudia's instinctive reaction was to refuse. "A party really isn't necessary. I'll just get together with a few friends some other time."
York could feel the distance in her tone.
