From outside the door, Gideon knocked. "I'm leaving?"
Claudia spun around and yelled at the door, "Go! Get out of here before my parents come back!"
Hearing her reaction, a smile tugged at Gideon's lips. Even the great Mr. Gideon had his clandestine moments.
About ten minutes later, Gideon's car pulled out of the residential complex.
The window of a black luxury car parked by the roadside rolled down slowly. The person inside watched as Gideon’s car drove away, not looking away until it had completely vanished from sight.
That evening, at The Imperial Club.
Claudia, along with Rae Blake—who happened to be visiting family in Capital City—and two other former classmates, arrived at the private room as planned.
Most of the group was already there.
York sat in the center of the sofa, flanked by Peter, Darleen, and a few other close friends on his left. The seat to his right was conspicuously empty.
By long-standing tradition, that seat was reserved for Claudia.
Her eyes met York's, and she froze.
Sensing her discomfort, Rae Blake grabbed her arm and pointed to the other side of the room. "Come on, let's sit over there."
Just as they were about to move, Peter and Darleen stood up to intercept them.
Darleen handed Claudia a beautifully wrapped gift box. "For you, Claudia."
Claudia said her thanks and gracefully tucked it into her bag.
Peter pointed to the empty seat next to York. "We saved you a spot. Go on, sit down."
"I want to sit with Claudia," Rae Blake said, trying to smooth things over.
The young man sitting next to the empty spot quickly stood up. "You two lovely ladies can sit together. I'll move over there."
Claudia and Rae exchanged a look, feeling it would be rude to refuse any further.
Peter seized the opportunity and guided Claudia to sit beside York. With a mischievous glint in his eye, he gave her a little push, sending her tumbling right into York's lap.
"Everyone says our beauty Claudia chases Mr. Ferguson relentlessly, but it looks more like he's the one chasing her."
"They're childhood sweethearts. The first wedding didn't work out, but the next one will. It doesn't matter who chases whom."
"Exactly! Mr. Ferguson even remembers her period so clearly. I think they're crazy about each other."
"Totally. From the moment Claudia walked in, York's eyes have been glued to her. We all saw it."
"Mr. Ferguson, why don't you and Claudia get married on the same day as your sister's engagement to Peter? A double celebration for the Ferguson family!"
...
The more they talked, the more festive the mood became. Claudia couldn't help but glance at Peter and Darleen.
She noticed the sickeningly sweet way Peter was looking at Darleen and turned to York in surprise.
They looked at each other, and she asked, "When did Peter and Darleen get together?"
York replied, "The night Darleen called to tell you she wanted to celebrate with you."
