Claudia turned around.
She walked back to York and said frankly, “Gideon comes from a good family, he’s capable, handsome, and has a great personality. He’s an excellent man in every way.”
York’s dark eyes stared intently at her face. “If he pursued you, would you consider it?”
Claudia looked up, her gaze meeting his.
Such a blatant test was unlike York.
Looking him straight in the eye, Claudia said, word by word, “Maybe I would.”
Her connection with Gideon had begun with a drunken mistake.
If she could, she would knock him out and give him amnesia, just to make him forget that night.
But from the way Gideon was acting now, it was clear he wanted to see where things could go.
He was open with her, his advances both direct and suggestive, yet he never pressured her and always respected her wishes.
She had asked for secrecy, and he hadn't breathed a word to anyone.
Although, he did occasionally drop a raunchy comment when they were alone.
Gideon was an outstanding man.
If, one day, she truly developed feelings for him, she would bravely accept them.
Claudia’s firm tone made York’s chest tighten.
His gaze flickered with uncertainty.
“It’s cold out here,” he said. “You should go up.”
Claudia gave him one last look before turning and walking away decisively.
As he watched her disappear into the elevator, York felt as if all the strength had been drained from his body.
He stumbled back a few steps, his back hitting the car door, which was the only thing holding him up.
Maybe she would.
That meant it hadn’t started yet.
Claudia had loved him deeply, and he had disappointed her profoundly.
She wouldn’t easily accept someone else.
As long as she remained unmarried, he still had a chance.
York repeated this to himself, over and over, like a mantra.
Claudia nodded and followed him into the living room.
York instinctively reached for Claudia’s hand, but his fingers only brushed her sleeve before he quietly pulled back.
As they entered the living room, Darleen happily rushed over. “Claudia, you’re finally here!”
Claudia went with Darleen to see Wendy.
She sat down beside Wendy. “Aunt Wendy, are you feeling any better?”
Wendy had been down with a cold for a week and looked drained.
“Just seeing you has already made me feel halfway better,” Wendy said, taking Claudia’s hand affectionately.
York interjected, “Mom, dinner’s ready. Let’s go to the dining room and chat while we eat.”
Watching York, dressed in loose-fitting loungewear, bend down to move the small stool from Wendy’s feet and instruct his sister to be careful as she helped their mother, Claudia felt he had become more human than before.
He had a strange air of domesticity about him now.
It seemed that in this new life, he had learned the importance of family.
When Wendy entered the dining room, she marveled at the table laden with exquisite dishes.
She asked her son, “York, Claudia’s favorite is matcha truffles. Why didn’t you prepare any for her?”
