Claudia pulled her hand free from York’s grasp and demanded, “What do you mean?”

York explained in a low voice, “We need to catch them red-handed. The big fish hasn't taken the bait yet. If you call now, you’ll tip them off.”

In the darkness, Claudia looked closely into York’s eyes and slowly calmed down. York never did anything he wasn't sure of. His confidence meant he must have already made arrangements.

“Don’t worry,” York assured her. “I’ve already made preparations. Mr. Ferguson’s wife and son will be safe.”

Claudia silently looked away. Neither of them spoke again, hiding quietly in the dark corner as they waited.

Half an hour later, two more cars arrived. A foreigner and a bald man got out of each car, followed by more than a dozen armed thugs. Claudia watched in shock as they headed into the abandoned building, then immediately took out her phone and called the police.

“I have to go save them!” she said to York.

York stopped her. He softened his tone to comfort her. “Mark and his men are already inside. I’ll go in as backup just in case. You stay here and keep watch for the police.”

“I’m going with you,” Claudia insisted.

“Trust me,” York promised. “Even if something happens to me, I won’t let anything happen to that mother and son.”

They looked at each other, York’s gaze exceptionally firm.

Claudia nodded obediently. This time, she chose to trust him.

Watching York disappear into the dark, abandoned building, Claudia waited outside, her heart racing with anxiety. There was already one group of kidnappers inside, and now two more groups had joined them, all carrying weapons. This was a scene she had only ever seen on television.

About ten minutes later, the wail of police sirens filled the air. Claudia finally saw a glimmer of hope.

A police officer got out of his car. “Are you the one who called?”

Claudia pointed toward the building. “Yes, I am. A mother and son have been taken hostage inside. You have to save them quickly.”
