Every word Claudia spoke, though delivered lightly, struck York’s heart like a hammer.
If only he had understood the meaning behind her words sooner, he and Claudia might not have ended up where they were today.
It was all his own fault.
The pain from the wound on his arm was nothing compared to the sharp ache deep in his heart.
York swallowed the bitterness in his throat, personally opened the car door for Claudia, and sent her home.
—
The next morning, just as Claudia arrived at her office, Gideon’s sister-in-law, Jackie, knocked and entered.
Claudia greeted her politely.
Jackie pressed a hand to her forehead, frowning. “Dr. Watkins, I haven’t been sleeping well these past few days. I came to have you check my pulse without an appointment. I hope I’m not disturbing you.”
“Not at all,” Claudia said, shaking her head quickly. “Please, have a seat.”
Claudia knew Jackie's husband was a leading figure in both Eastern and Western medicine. There was no reason for a member of the Harvest family to see her for a minor issue. This woman had come looking for her on purpose.
Jackie was the eldest daughter-in-law of the Harvest family, and Westminster General Hospital was their property. Claudia knew she couldn't afford to be disrespectful.
Just as Claudia was about to sit, Jackie spoke again. “Let’s go to Gideon’s office. The environment is better there.”
Claudia hesitated for a moment.
Jackie raised an eyebrow. “Or should I have Director Harvest come get you himself?”
Before she even finished her sentence, Claudia obediently stood up.
