All eyes followed the line of Gideon’s father's gaze, where a woman in a custom-made blue evening gown was slowly descending from the second floor.
Enhanced by the lighting and makeup, the woman’s features were exquisite and her aura was outstanding, drawing a wave of admiration from the crowd.
“Who is this woman? Why would the Harvest family suddenly adopt her?”
“I heard it was the matriarch’s idea.”
“To be chosen by the Harvest family, she must have an extraordinary background.”
...
Amidst the murmurs, Ann gracefully walked up to the Harvest family, holding the hem of her dress.
However, a number of people recognized her as Selene’s niece.
“Isn’t that woman Selene’s niece?”
“That’s her! I still had unused credit at her aunt’s beauty salon when it closed down. I was wondering where she went, and here she is!”
“I heard her aunt was Mrs. Quinn's best friend, but she stole Mrs. Quinn’s husband, got pregnant, and went into hiding.”
“Her aunt stole her best friend’s husband. The niece can’t be any good either.”
“I heard this woman was arrested twice by Mr. Ferguson. It was her aunt who slept with Mr. Quinn to get him to bail her out.”
...
The voices of several socialites grew louder, and Ann twisted her hands together in humiliation.
Fortunately, she had ‘explained’ everything to Gideon and his parents beforehand. Otherwise, these vicious women would have truly ruined everything.
Before all the guests, Ann served tea to the matriarch and Gideon’s parents, formally addressing them by her new titles and accepting their gifts.
As she collected her presents, Ann smiled sweetly while mentally taking note of the socialites who had just slandered her.
After today, she would be the adopted daughter of the Harvest family, a true heiress. Every prominent family in Capital City would have to show her some respect. Then, she would deal with every single one of those old and young bitches who had maligned her.
Ann walked demurely over to Kenny and his wife. “Kenny, Jackie.”
Darleen couldn’t stand watching Ann’s affected mannerisms any longer. She pushed past Peter and strode into the center of the room. Claudia and Peter hurried to follow.
She addressed the Harvest family, “Do you even know what her background is, daring to bring her into your home like this?”
Seeing Darleen making trouble, Ann’s conscience pricked her. She lowered her head and started to cry softly. “Miss Ferguson, I don’t believe I’ve ever offended you. Why are you always targeting me?”
Darleen was thoroughly sick of Ann. She pointed a finger at Ann’s forehead in front of everyone and said, “Cry, cry, cry. Do you think you can fool everyone by playing innocent and pathetic, that they won’t know about all the disgusting things you and your aunt have done?”
