Darleen's public exposure of Ann's past enraged Gideon. His face darkened immediately as he reprimanded her, “Miss Ferguson, please watch what you say!”
Peter pulled Darleen to his side. “Matriarch, please don’t be angry yet,” he said, addressing the elderly woman. “This Ann’s aunt was Mrs. Quinn’s best friend, but she stole her friend’s husband and became Mr. Quinn’s mistress. They say birds of a feather flock together. Darleen was only trying to warn you out of good will.”
Peter’s voice wasn't loud, but it was clear enough for everyone to hear.
Ann shot Peter a vicious glare. That bastard did it on purpose.
It was one thing to hear such gossip from chattering socialites, but to hear it from Peter, the second son of the Louis family, carried a different kind of weight.
The crowd's expressions shifted as they looked at Ann.
Unable to defend herself, Ann burst into tears. “Grandma,” she sobbed to the matriarch, “I’ve already explained everything to you. I’m just a humble person, and no one will believe anything I say. Since everyone misunderstands my aunt and me so much, I can’t stay here and cause trouble for the Harvest family. I’ll pack my things and leave right now.”
The matriarch took Ann’s hand, her expression firm. “No matter what anyone says, Grandma will only believe you.”
Ann’s tears turned to a smile.
Claudia glanced at York, her face unreadable. She hadn’t expected the matriarch to be so partial to Ann.
Just then, Marcia stepped out from the crowd. She gave Ann a disdainful look and handed a file to Gideon’s mother in front of everyone. “Gideon's mom, it would be best to look at this in private.”
At the matriarch's declaration, Gideon’s parents exchanged a troubled look.
Just then, Mrs. Quinn made a dramatic entrance. “The matriarch is right, no one is perfect. But a bitch is a bitch, which hardly counts as a person.”
Seeing Mrs. Quinn, Ann guiltily hid behind the matriarch. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she didn't dare to look up. That old woman had hounded her and her aunt even after they fled abroad, and now she was here to cause trouble just as Ann was about to join the Harvest family. After today, Ann vowed, she would make her pay first.
Mrs. Quinn's insult was so crude that even the matriarch's face stiffened. “Mrs. Quinn,” the Harvest matriarch said, “if you’re here to offer congratulations, our family welcomes you. But if you’re here to make trouble, don’t blame an old woman like me for being impolite.”
Mrs. Quinn sneered. “I’m just here to kindly remind the matriarch that if you welcome a little bitch into your home, you’d better watch out for trouble in your house.”
