Chapter 261 The Faces of Betrayal
“Why are you here? Where are the Whitewoods?” Evelyn’s piercing voice shattered the oppressive silence in the room.
“They’re all dead,” Shane replied, his tone cold and emotionless.
That one sentence was all Evelyn and Jason needed to piece things together.
“They abandoned her? Just because she didn’t grow up with them, they think they can turn their backs on Seraphina like this?” Evelyn’s anger bubbled over, her voice rising with every word.
Jason extended his hand and softly stroked Seraphina’s furrowed brow, attempting to soothe her. He wondered, What is it that haunts you so much, even when you sleep?
Evelyn’s sharp eyes caught the exhaustion etched on Shane’s face. “You need rest. Uncle Jason and I will handle things here,” she urged, softening her tone.
Yet Shane stayed rooted in place, silent and unmoving.
Evelyn added, “Fine, stay if you wish, but don’t overexert yourself before Seraphina wakes Do you want her to see you in this state? She’s already under immense pressure. Don’t add to her burden.”
Evelyn’s words hung in the air, but Shane didn’t respond. His mind was trapped in a loop, replaying Seraphina’s tearful, broken expression when she clung to Sebastian.
Without another word, he quietly got up and walked out.
Jason’s gaze lingered on his nephew briefly, softening a bit. For once, he thought, Evelyn wasn’t entirely useless.
She didn’t notice his reaction. Her focus was fixed on Seraphina, lying pale and fragile on the bed. The sight tore at her heart.
“H
n a fever get this bad?” Evelyn muttered, gently holding Seraphina’s hand.
Jason’s phone buzzed, pulling him out of the moment. He stepped out of the room to answer it.
“KG, I’ve got something for you. That lead you asked about–Ratty Ray is holed up in a warehouse over in Bonato.” a raspy voice spoke on the other end.
“Keep him there,” Jason replied, his voice icy.
The voice on the other end of the call reassured him, “Don’t worry. He’s not going anywhere-

I’ve got him locked down.”
Jason ended the call and took a deep breath before stepping back inside. The cold edge in his expression melted the moment he re–entered the ward.
The Whitewood Family showed up late the following day, as expected. Aidan was missing, but the rest showed up together, with Linara at the center, dressed to impress.
“Make sure you take your chance if Jason’s here,” Oberon instructed her firmly. It was clear he didn’t want to let the chance slip away and saw Seraphina’s unconscious state as the perfect moment for Linara to step in.
Linara nodded, understanding what was at stake. She knew that turning Jason’s attention away from Seraphina and toward herself would solidify her position in the family.
To her father, Seraphina was merely a tool to connect with the Drakon and Foster Families. Now that Seraphina was bedridden and might be out of the way, Linara recognized her chance to claim it all herself.
“I won’t let you down,” Linara promised with a sweet, obedient smile.
Her outfit that day was deliberately styled to mimic Seraphina’s look from head to toe.
