The Cloudscape.
Lucian Thorne had just left the office when he got the call from Jonah Chase.
He pushed open the door to the private room and was hit by a wave of stale alcohol fumes in the dim light.
"Thorne, you're finally here! I was about to suffocate," Jonah said, looking up at the sound. Seeing Lucian was like seeing a savior, and he immediately got up to greet him.
Lucian scanned the room, his gaze landing on the man sitting on the sofa in the corner. Surprise flickered across his face before he turned a questioning look on Jonah.
Sensing Lucian's stare, Jonah grimaced. "Don't look at me like that. I'm just as clueless as you are. I was about to ask you what's going on."
He had just returned from a trip abroad to dodge the blind dates his old-fashioned father had set up for him. Before he could even shake off the jet lag, he got a call from Elias to come out for drinks.
He was exhausted and groggy, but the thought that Elias rarely initiated a get-together was enough to get him to drag himself over, wanting to be a supportive friend.
Who knew he'd end up sitting here until his butt went numb, while Elias just drank in silence?
Jonah had tried a few times to ask what was wrong. Wasn't it Genevieve's birthday today? Shouldn't he be with her?
But every time he looked at the icy, oppressive aura radiating from Elias, the words died in his throat.
Finally, out of options, Jonah had called Lucian.
Since Lucian was also one of Elias's closest friends, it didn't seem fair for him to suffer alone.
They had been friends forever, so Lucian knew exactly what Jonah was thinking. He shot him a look.
But it was just as well. He had a few questions of his own.
Lucian walked over, sat down, and got straight to the point. "I thought the investigation showed Genevieve miscarried because she fell by accident. Why did you still get a divorce? Last time at the hospital, I thought you'd changed your mind."
He had heard about it from Cerys.
Cerys had come home in a great mood a couple of days ago, announcing she was going to stay with Victoria for a few days. As she packed, she had been cursing Elias's name. He had only caught bits and pieces, enough to know they were divorced, but not why.
"Genevieve had a miscarriage? When? How come I didn't know?" Jonah felt like the only clueless guy in the middle of it all, completely lost but desperate for details. "And what's this about a divorce? Why did you get divorced, Elias, you…"
Lucian shoved a glass against Jonah's lips. "No one will think you're mute if you just shut up."
The clueless one fell silent.
