Looking through the car window, she saw a burly, thick-waisted man standing there, shouting for her to get out.
Hawk, who should have been in the driver's seat, was outside, surrounded by two other brawny men. He saw what was happening on her side and wanted to help, but he was too tied up to intervene.
The scene was chaotic.
Victoria, having just woken up, was still too groggy to understand what was happening.
Wasn't she on her way back to Willow Creek Estates?
Who were these people?
Before she could figure it out, Victoria saw two police cars pull up. Two officers quickly got out, batons in hand, and immediately moved to pin the man who had been banging on the window.
“Get off me!”
The man was caught off guard. By the time he realized what was happening, he was already pressed firmly against the car door, his arms twisted behind his back, unable to move.
With a grim expression, an officer shouted, “Stay still!”
But the man acted as if he hadn't heard, struggling desperately while slurring a stream of curses.
Seeing this, the officer didn't hesitate. With a sharp click, he swiftly handcuffed the man. The two officers then flanked him and shoved him into their patrol car.
In an instant, the noisy, chaotic scene fell silent.
Victoria pushed the door open and got out.
As soon as she opened the door, she noticed the strong, acrid smell of alcohol in the air, as well as the white sedan parked crookedly in front of their car.
Hawk exchanged a few words with an officer and then hurried over. “Miss Sanger, are you all right?”
Victoria glanced at the obvious bruise on Hawk's face where he'd been punched. The corner of her mouth twitched almost imperceptibly. She thought to herself that he was the one who wasn't all right, not her.
However, the thought was fleeting, and she didn't say it out loud. Instead, she took a pack of tissues from her pocket and handed it to Hawk, gesturing for him to wipe the trickle of blood from his mouth. She then shook her head and asked, “What happened?”
“Drunk drivers trying to pull a scam.” Hawk's lip was split, and it stung when he spoke, so he kept his explanation brief.
The officer looked troubled. The department had been cracking down on drunk driving lately, especially in cases involving scams like this. They required the case to be closed the same day, or the officers would face disciplinary action.
And the most crucial part of closing a case was getting statements from both parties.
If it had been an ordinary person who was unwilling to cooperate, he could have been more forceful and just taken them down to the station. But the man in front of him was Elias’s executive assistant.
Forget him—even his own supervisor would have to be respectful toward Hawk and wouldn't dare to offend him.
“Assistant Hawk, don’t worry, it won’t take much of your time. Just ten minutes,” the officer pleaded, clearly in a difficult position.
Hawk wasn’t the type to make things difficult for others. Seeing the officer’s predicament, he hesitated. Giving a statement was supposed to be quick, but there was no guarantee something else wouldn’t come up and cause a delay. If that made him late with Mr. Shawn's files, he'd be the one in deep trouble.
Victoria saw his hesitation and knew what he was worried about. Remembering that Hawk had helped her before, she offered, “Assistant Hawk, if you don’t mind, I can go back to The Imperial Crest Estates and get the file for you.”
Hawk's face lit up. “I don’t mind at all! If you’re willing, Miss Sanger, that would be perfect! Thank you! As soon as I'm done here, I'll come to The Imperial Crest Estates to pick you up.”
Victoria agreed with a slight purse of her lips and, without another word, hailed a cab to The Imperial Crest Estates.
