“What position do you have in mind?” Lance asked, looking Ivan straight in the eye.
Ivan didn’t hesitate. “The higher, the better. This project… it’s the first big one for our branch. It could make us the frontrunner in Eldervale.”
He didn’t say it outright, but everyone understood how important this project was.
If Lance was going to give him a promotion, Ivan wanted it to be a good one. Something like branch general manager.
He wasn’t subtle about it, and both Lance and Catherine picked up on his hint right away.
“When the time comes, you can have your pick of any position here,” Lance said easily.
Catherine’s eyelids fluttered. The soft glow of her laptop screen lit up her face, her eyes dark and clear, shadows flickering deep inside them.
“Are you serious, Lance?” Ivan asked. He knew where he stood, just like Catherine had pointed out before. He was one of Ingram’s people. Lance would never really trust him with real power. Handing him this huge project was already more than he’d expected.
Lance just smiled, fingertips tapping lightly on the desk. “That depends. You have to be loyal to me, Ivan. I know you’re related to Ingram, but everyone’s out for themselves. Working for him, you’re just making his son look good. You’ll never get your own chance to shine. If you come with me, I can give you everything he can, and you’ll get the credit and the rewards.”
Ingram’s son was a lost cause.
Ivan, though, had the right education and real talent.
But as long as he stayed under Ingram, all his hard work would just end up making Isaac look good. Everything Ivan achieved would be used to boost Isaac’s position.
Even if Lance couldn’t offer much more in terms of rank, at least the recognition would be Ivan’s own.
Lance knew Ivan wanted that. He could see right through him, which made Ivan extra cautious.
“What if I said I want Catherine’s job?” Ivan asked, testing the waters.
“Fine,” Lance said without missing a beat. “As long as you deliver, you can run the branch however you want.”
Ivan felt a jolt of excitement, but he didn’t let his guard down. He was happy, sure, but he was also suspicious.
“Let’s talk after the project’s done, Lance,” he said. He wasn’t about to agree right away.
Lance nodded, ending the conversation.
