The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 4

He glanced over at Lance’s office. “Just go ahead and knock. It’s work, after all.”

The meeting room door was wide open, so you could see everything going on in the CEO’s office.-

Adelina sat right on the edge of Lance’s chair, so close their shoulders almost touched. Lance’s usually sharp features looked softer than usual, and behind those gold-rimmed glasses, his eyes were warm, almost tender.

Maybe this was just how they’d been for the past six months, because Aaron didn’t even blink at the sight.

But for Catherine, it was a punch to the gut. She stopped breathing for a second. She’d honestly thought that after the divorce, after changing departments and putting some distance between her and Lance, her feelings for him would slowly fade away.

She hadn’t expected the jealousy to hit so hard, so suddenly, just from seeing him close to another woman. It felt like someone had pressed a hundred tiny needles into her heart, all at once.

She forced a smile and tore her eyes away.

“I’ll leave you to it, then. Thanks for your help.”

Aaron took the envelope from her. “No problem.”

He figured Catherine was just trying to keep things professional and distant. She’d asked for a transfer right after the divorce and now she made sure not to see Lance outside of work.

“Take care, Aaron.” Catherine picked up her briefcase and gave him a little wave. “I’ll skip the reception tonight.”

Better to go home early and sort through her files than stand around watching Lance and Adelina act like the perfect couple.

Lance never gave people trouble if they wanted to resign.

There were still two weeks until the end-of-year holidays. That was plenty of time for him to find someone to take her place and for her to wrap up her work.

She still had to figure out where to go after leaving Cabinda.

Somewhere with no SilverLeaf Industries office, somewhere Lance would never show up.

***

Aaron set the reports and Catherine’s resignation letter on Lance’s desk.
