Madeline’s eyes flickered with surprise. She never expected Julian to do something like this. If they never found the real culprit and she was actually found guilty, how would he ever face his mother? How would he handle being caught between the two of them?
People out there were already waiting for a scandal. If no evidence cleared her name, every word Julian had said to the media would eventually come back to him, each one harsher than the last.
Madeline’s fingers curled into her palm. She honestly hadn’t thought Julian would be the first to speak up for her, to stand in front of everyone and say he trusted her.
“Are you alright, dear?” The owner’s wife gave Madeline a gentle, worried look, touching her arm softly.
Madeline pulled herself together. “I’m fine, thank you.” She tried to leave, but quickly realized she had nowhere else to go.
…
That night, the owner’s wife called her down for dinner. The couple was just as warm as ever. Madeline took the bowl from her, thanked her, but the words she’d been holding in tumbled out. “You saw everything online. Aren’t you afraid I might actually be a fugitive?”
The owner grinned and waved it off. “Your husband chose you over his own mother. There’s got to be a misunderstanding, right? Once they figure it out, you’ll be proven innocent.”
The owner’s wife smiled and nodded. “Besides, you’re so gentle. You don’t look like someone who could hurt a fly, let alone stab someone. Eat up. Your husband paid us a good amount to take care of you, and that’s exactly what we’ll do.”
They weren’t scared of her. They didn’t treat her like a criminal, or even like someone special. They just talked to her like a friend, always paying attention to how she felt. That simple kindness warmed something deep inside Madeline.
She pressed her lips together, her voice soft. “Thank you.”
After dinner, with nowhere to go, Madeline headed back to her room early. She didn’t turn on the lights. Instead, she sat by the window, chin propped on her hand, and let the cool night breeze drift in.
