Maxwell spoke up just then. “The real Madeline grew up with the Monroe family, so the people who know her best... well, that would be the Monroes. Someone go to the Capital and bring every member of the Monroe family here.”
As he said this, Madeline shook her head.
If Grandma Monroe had given the pendant to this fake and even helped her pull off this whole act, then maybe the Monroe family had already been bought. Bringing them in wouldn’t help at all. Whatever they said would probably be a lie.
She turned to the elders and said, “The Monroe family can’t really prove which of us is the real Madeline.”
“Why not?” one of them asked.
“If you send someone to the Capital to ask around, you’ll find out exactly how the Monroes have treated me over the years. They didn’t love me. Honestly, they barely even cared. How could they possibly know me well enough to tell who I am?”
She wasn’t wrong. Even Grandma Monroe, who was supposed to care about her, only ever showed up to play the good guy when Drew and the others bullied her. She made it look like she was protecting her, but that was it.
In truth, Madeline hadn’t spent much time living with the Monroe family. Every visit seemed to end in an argument, and by the time the dust settled, there was never any real chance to get close.
Madeline took a slow breath, pushing down all the emotions that threatened to rise up. She looked at the elders and said, “If you don’t believe me, just go ask around. I have nothing to hide.”
“Is that so?” Claire cut in, her eyes cold as she stared at Madeline. “Looks like you did your homework, but you missed a few details. My father, Drew, was never kind to me because he loved his new wife and my stepsister more. But my grandmother was amazing to me. Elders, you can check if I’m telling the truth.”
Madeline looked at Claire, her cool gaze narrowing as everything suddenly made sense. She let out a low, bitter laugh and murmured, “So that’s how it is.”
It was clear this scheme had been planned for years. Everything Claire said was true, at least on the surface. Grandma Monroe had put on a perfect show. If someone went to check, all they’d see was a grandmother who always stuck up for her and cared for her.
If Grandma Monroe came out and vouched for one of them, her word would carry a lot of weight.
Madeline looked down, telling herself she wasn’t hurt, but that was a lie.
After her mother passed away, Grandma Monroe was the only person in the family who ever showed her any warmth, and she’d treasured that small kindness.
Now, she realized even that was fake. The whole point was to make her drop her guard.
