Madeline set the food container down and was just about to straighten up when she realized he was suddenly right behind her. An arm slid around her waist, pulling her into a warm back hug.
His voice was low and rough near her ear, tinged with a trace of happiness. “You came to see me on your own. That makes me really happy.”
Madeline’s lashes fluttered like butterfly wings. She turned in his arms to face him and met his intense gaze. “I actually came because I have something I want to talk over with you.”
He looked at her, her face reflected in his deep, dark eyes. “You coming to me when you need help… that makes me happy too.”
At least it meant he mattered to her in some way.
Madeline’s lips curled in a small, helpless smile. She gave his shoulders a gentle nudge. “Let me go. We should eat first. I haven’t had anything yet either.”
Julian let her go, his agreement soft, and bent down to start arranging the takeout on the table.
There were four dishes and a soup, everything looking and smelling amazing.
“Did you cook all this?” he asked.
“It’s from a restaurant,” Madeline replied, sitting across from him and grabbing a fork. “Come on, eat up.”
Julian smiled at her. “Alright. So, what did you want to talk about?”
Madeline fiddled with her fork for a moment before speaking. “Someone from the Ballard family reached out to me.”
Julian paused with his chopsticks, looking up at her. His eyes tightened with worry. “What did they say?”
“They invited me to the Ballard family’s banquet.”
He watched her closely. “Did you say yes?”
“I did.”
He nodded, a hint of approval in his eyes. “That’s the right call. Everybody knows exactly why they’re throwing a banquet right now. As for the people who came to you, I’m guessing it was Sam. Your uncle, right?”
