Grandma Monroe spoke up too. “That’s right. We still don’t know if Raine will make it, and we can’t just let the person responsible walk away. Call the police.”
Madeline couldn’t help but laugh to herself. They were quick to catch on. Now they were trying to use what happened to Raine as an excuse to kick her out of the Ballard family.
If the police got involved and started an investigation, she would be the main suspect. She’d definitely be taken in for questioning, which meant she’d have to miss the Ballard family banquet tomorrow.
Madeline stayed cool, but Sam and Brendan were starting to panic. Their whole plan depended on Madeline causing trouble at the banquet. If she was out of the picture, everything would fall apart.
Both of them stepped up to stop it. Brendan was the first to speak. “Wait a moment.”
Claire turned to him. “Why? Don’t you think whoever did this should be held accountable?”
Brendan let out a short laugh. “Give it a rest, will you? We don’t even know what really happened yet. Stop throwing accusations around and talking about justice. If you ask me, based on what’s been said, you look even more suspicious than she does. Maybe we should have both of you questioned.”
Brendan never hid his disdain for Claire, and he wasn’t about to be nice now.
Claire shot back, “That’s funny. You’re ready to treat me like a suspect just because of a few words from her? You’re siding with an outsider so openly. Did she give you something in return?”
“I’m just stating the facts. You think I’ve been bribed? Am I not allowed to speak the truth?”
