Madeline was lost in thought as she headed for the door. She honestly believed she was alone in the massive presidential suite, but the moment she pushed open the bedroom door, she froze.

Julian looked up at her, eyebrow raised, then stood and walked over. “You’re awake?”

“Mommy!”

“Mommy!”

Noah and Oliver rushed straight to her, throwing their little arms around her waist.

Madeline crouched down, catching them both in a hug, her face lighting up with surprise. “Noah, Oliver, when did you get here?”

Oliver grinned. “We came last night. Daddy said you were sleeping and told us not to wake you up.”

Noah nodded, all serious. “You went to bed really early, Mommy. Daddy said you were tired. Is it hard for you here?”

Madeline felt a jolt run through her, and suddenly her cheeks were warm.

“It’s not hard at all. Really.” She cleared her throat, trying to change the topic. “Did you have breakfast yet?”

Noah nodded. “We already ate. Daddy got you breakfast, Mommy. You should have some too.”

Julian reached for her hand and guided her over to the couch. “I figured you’d be up soon. Had them bring your breakfast a few minutes ago. Eat up.”

Madeline nodded and, as she sat down, asked casually, “Did you pick out the dress in the bedroom?”

Julian handed her a fork. “No, it was sent over by the Ballard family.”

She paused, fork in midair. “From the Ballard family? Did they say anything?”

“They said it was an apology. I checked into it. The fraud ordered that dress, but it was Brendan’s people who actually delivered it.”

Madeline’s eyes flickered with understanding. “So Brendan sent it to me behind her back?”

“Yeah, pretty much.”

She shook her head, letting out a laugh. “My uncles really know how to stir up drama.”

Tonight’s banquet was bound to be a disaster for someone. And the imposter definitely wouldn’t sit still. She’d do anything to stop Madeline from going, but they didn’t know what dirty tricks she’d try next.
