Brendan had already taken care of it last night. He found a dress identical to the ruined one and had it delivered straight to Claire’s room.
When Claire spotted the gown hanging there, she barely gave it a second glance. Right now, she had bigger problems than a dress. Tonight’s banquet was make or break for her, and she absolutely couldn’t let Madeline show up. With Brendan and Sam already causing trouble, she had no idea how she’d survive the night if Madeline joined in.
Claire’s eyes turned sharp. Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table. Anyone who got in her way would be dealt with. No exceptions.
As evening settled in, the Ballard estate came alive. The place was packed, every hallway buzzing with guests. Heirs and heiresses from the city’s most powerful families arrived one after another, all dressed to impress. After Shelly disappeared, it had been ages since the Ballards threw such a lavish party.
The word was out. This whole event was to celebrate the return of Ms. Ballard, Shelly’s only daughter, the future heir. Everyone wanted a glimpse of her. The media showed up in droves, cameras flashing at every entrance.
“I heard this party’s for the Ballard girl they just found. Anyone know what she looks like?”
“She could look like anything. Doesn’t matter. Now that she’s back, her whole life’s changed.”
“Did you guys hear? When they brought her home, two girls showed up. They looked exactly alike, both claiming to be Ms. Ballard.”
“For real? So who was the real one?”
“Obviously the real one stayed, and the fake got kicked out. Not surprising though. Who wouldn’t want that kind of life? Of course someone would try to fake it.”
“Seriously. There’s always someone trying to take what’s not theirs. So shameless.”
Helene and her family stepped out of their car just as the gossip reached them. Helene’s frown deepened. She gripped her dress so tightly her hands shook. “Dad, did you find out? Is the Ballard heiress really Madeline?”
Bill shook his head. “The Ballards are keeping everything secret. Most of what we’ve heard could just be rumors. I haven’t seen her with my own eyes, so I can’t say.”
