Lucy didn’t bother with any more politeness. She lifted her hand, and the attendant pushed her wheelchair forward, rolling her into the house without a backward glance.

Helene bit down on her lip, lowering her head as her emotions threatened to spill over again.

Bill exchanged a few quick words with Christian, then hurried Helene inside.

Christian wasn’t interested in talking to anyone. He turned his head, looking away.

George, always by his side, stepped up right away. “Sir?”

“Where are Julian and the kids?”

“Mr. Grayson and the kids are probably still at the hotel, sir. With… Ms. Monroe.”

At the mention of Madeline, Christian’s face tightened with irritation. He opened his mouth, ready to snap, but with so many people around, he forced himself to hold back.

His voice dropped to a low, warning tone. “Have someone keep an eye on them. If Madeline shows up at the banquet tonight, it’s going to be chaos. Julian lets her get away with anything, and he’ll go along with her nonsense. Don’t let her mess up this event.”

“Yes, sir. I understand.”

Christian leaned on his cane, walking slowly into the house.

Inside the Ballard family’s grand hall, Lucy ran into Reyna, Sam’s wife. Reyna greeted her with a bright smile.

“Mrs. Grayson, I heard you were hurt. How are you feeling now? I’m so glad to see you out and about.”

Lucy took Reyna’s hand and nodded. “I’m much better, thank you.”

Reyna looked like she wanted to ask more, but Lucy spoke first. “Mrs. Ballard, I heard Ms. Ballard has been found. Could I meet her?”

Lucy had come all this way, injury and all, just to see this woman with her own eyes and figure out who she really was.

“You want to meet her?” Reyna paused for a second, surprised.
