Claire loved being the center of attention. With all eyes on her, she practically sparkled.
She brushed a strand of hair behind her shoulder, letting her delicate collarbones show. Her face was already impossibly pretty, but with that dress catching the light, she looked like she was positively glowing. No one else in the room could compete.
The men nearby couldn’t look away. Tonight, with that face and that dress, Claire was without a doubt the star of the entire party.
Her smile grew even brighter. She glanced around and noticed Madeline still hadn’t arrived. That made her relax. It looked like Madeline wasn’t going to show up after all.
Outside the Ballard family estate, a sleek black Rolls-Royce came to a stop.
Julian stepped out, his suit perfectly tailored. He walked around and opened the other car door, offering his hand.
A graceful woman stepped out and took a long breath as she looked at the grand entrance. She slid her hand into Julian’s.
“Are you nervous?” Julian’s voice was soft and low.
Madeline shook her head. “There’s no reason for me to be nervous.”
Julian liked that about her, the calm confidence she always carried. He smiled and tucked her hand into the crook of his arm. “You’re right.”
Madeline gathered her skirt in one hand and walked with Julian toward the entrance.
She didn’t notice the Ballard family guards by the door staring at her, completely transfixed.
Most of the guests were already inside. As they made their way along the path, they spotted a man standing with his back to them, leaning on a cane.
It was Christian.
“So you’re siding with the imposter now?” he asked.
Christian shook his head. “I don’t care about any imposter. What I care about is you. You’ve lost your sense over this woman. You risked your reputation for her, you ignored the family’s opinions, and now you’re here causing a scene again. Is this how the future head of the Grayson family should act?”
Christian’s voice was sharp and angry. He even started to cough from the effort.
Julian’s eyes narrowed. “So you want me to do nothing? Stand by while she’s blamed for something she didn’t do? You think that’s right?”
“Leaving her alone is what’s right,” Christian said.
Julian shook his head. “I still don’t understand. Why are you so set against her? What did she ever do to deserve this?”
