"Alright, let me know if you need anything. I'll have someone come over," Neil said, his tone dismissive as if he couldn't wait to leave.
I quickly stepped forward to stop him. "Neil, you need to explain things to me."
Neil looked at me from under his brows, a hint of something in his eyes. From this angle, he seemed superior, his handsome features flawless as ever.
"What do you want to know?" He asked, lips barely moving.
"I want to know what your feelings are towards Hiram, why they’ve changed. And your parents, they can't just abandon Hiram. What's going on? Tell me. Hiram's just a kid, you know how Karina treats him now. I don't want him to lose you guys too," I found myself getting agitated, probably because I genuinely felt bad for Hiram.
Neil held my gaze, his usual indifference now seeming cruel when directed at Hiram.
My heart sank.
"You don't need to worry about that. I have other things to attend to now. I'm leaving Hiram in your care," Neil brushed me off and walked past me, leaving the room.
I watched him leave, puzzled and unable to shake off the feeling of unease.
I spent some time alone outside Hiram's hospital room. Hiram was awake, trying to grab a toy Neil had put together with his free hand, his face a picture of frustration.
"Let me help you," I quickly walked in and placed the toy on his lap.
Hiram gave me a sweet smile, clutching the toy with his good hand. "Thank you, Ms. Finch. Where's my dad? Is he busy?"
"Yes, he had to go to work. Why, are you missing him already?" I asked, smiling back at him.
"Yes, I miss my dad, and my grandparents too. But they're all so busy," Hiram replied maturely, "My grandparents said they'll come visit me later, I just don't know when."
My heart clenched at his words. 'Later' might be too late if Hiram didn't get a transplant soon. It didn't seem right for Ryan and Faith to leave their only grandson in such a state.
Looking at Hiram's innocent, hopeful face, I felt a pang of sympathy.
"Don't worry, they'll come to see you. You just focus on fighting the illness, okay?" I reassured Hiram.
I stepped outside to talk to one of the guards, asking if Karina had visited Hiram recently. As Hiram's mother, she couldn't possibly have left him entirely in Neil's care with no concern, right?
The guard shook his head. "No, she hasn't been here."
I was at a loss for words. What was Karina trying to do? She used to fight with Neil over Hiram, insisting on treating him herself. Now, she seemed to have given up the fight but completely ignored her son.
